Diploma in Non-Domestic Energy Assessments (DipNDEA L3/L4)

DETAILS:

In April 2008 the UK Government introduced Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for commercial premises as part of its strategy to implement the Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD).

The inspection and certification process must be conducted by accredited Non-Domestic Energy Assessors (NDEAs) for the production of EPCs for buildings such as offices, retail, shops, industrial units, warehouses and other commercial buildings that use energy to heat or cool.

National Occupational Standards were developed for the definition of competencies required of Building Energy Assessors.  These standards are the basis of vocational qualifications in non-domestic (a.k.a. commercial) energy assessments.  The standards are disparate to form three different levels of qualifications, which are as follows:

Diploma Non Domestic Energy Assessment - Level 3 relates to simple existing buildings with commonly occurring characteristics that can be modelled using the Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM)

Diploma Non Domestic Energy Assessment - Level 4 relates to new and more complex existing buildings with substantial air conditioning systems that can be modelled using SBEM.

Diploma Non Domestic Energy Assessment - Level 5 relates to the most complex new and existing buildings that will need to be modelled using Dynamic Simulation models.

The diploma in the aforementioned Level 3 and Level 4 will be beneficial to those with limited experience of assessing the energy performance of non-domestic buildings. It can be of interest to those who want a qualification that is manageable between Accreditation Bodies.

In the event of you being an energy specialist whose undertakings are in the non-domestic buildings and industrial premises, you might have the skills to operate at Level 4 or Level 5. In this case you may not require additional training. However, you can go through the APEL (Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning) route to accreditation. Please call 0844 800 6562 for more details or Click here for more details of the APEL qualification route.

PROGRAMME:

Diploma Non Domestic Energy Assessment - Level 3 and Level 4

Day 1 & 5 Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM) (Level 3 and 4)

  • Principles of energy calculation and rating
  • The structure of the iSBEM tool
  • Data assembly and zoning rules
  • Entering general information, building fabric, geometry and building services details
  • Generating the EPC and recommendations report

Day 2 Commercial building construction and survey (Level 3 and Level 4)

  • Recognising commonly occurring commercial building constructions
  • Determining the age of commercial property
  • Measuring and Survey techniques
  • Sources of information

Day 3 & 4 Building Services  (Level 3 and Level 4)

  • Basic principles
  • Heating systems – heat generation and distribution
  • Comfort cooling systems
  • Hot water provision
  • Controls
  • Lighting
  • Sources of information
  • Understanding the limits of a Level 3 assessment

Day 6 & 7 Advanced services, zoning and new build issues  (Level 4)

  • Part L compliance checking and the limits to a Level 4 assessment
  • Understanding construction drawings and terminology
  • Recognition of full range of air conditioning systems, heat recovery devices, HWS equipment etc
  • Determining non-default information
  • Working out U & Cm values for constructions not in the databases
  • Zoning for combination systems
  • Advanced Classroom exercises

The Level 3 qualification requires attendance at Days 1 to 5 while the Level 4 qualification also requires Days 6 and 7.

Throughout the course you will have a unique classroom learning experience which will be supported by practical sessions as necessary. During this you will survey a real building and collect the data needed to build up an energy model. This will give you practical experience of producing an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for a representative commercial building within a supported learning environment. The practical sessions will contain assessment of the skills you have developed. The SBEM training includes a large component of valuable hands on practise using case study exercises.

After the completion of training you will move into a period of assessment where you will illustrate the practical application of the skills you have learned and provide evidence of your ability to practise competently as a Building Energy Assessor. You will demonstrate that you have variety of skills and knowledge required by the National Occupational Standards by carrying out energy assessments and submitting these for formal assessment.

Please note that we would normally expect the Level 4 Diploma to be a top up for a Level 3 assessor who has gained some experience at that level. However some applicants, who are more experienced in commercial buildings and/or work for a company that will provide a supportive technical environment, will be eligible to go directly to Level 4.
